Principle Of Implementation Of Blood Pressure Monitor

Blood pressure monitors are devices used to measure arterial pressure when blood is pumped away from the heart. Typically, from a user's perspective, the monitor includes an inflatable cuff to limit blood flow and a pressure gauge to measure blood pressure. From a system designer's point of view, a blood pressure monitor is much more complicated. Its components include power, motor, storage, pressure sensors and user interfaces (including a display, a small keyboard or touch board, a sounding device, and an optional USB or ZigBee connectivity interface).


Blood pressure [1] is constantly changing in the process of vasoconstriction and relaxation. Systolic blood pressure is the peak pressure in the artery. It occurs at the beginning of the cardiac rhythm, and the ventricle contracts. The diastolic blood pressure is the minimum pressure in the artery, which occurs at the end of the cardiac rhythm, when the ventricle is filled with blood. A healthy, calm adult's typical blood pressure measurement is: systolic pressure of 115 millimeter mercury (mmHg) (15 thousand Pascal [kPa]) and diastolic pressure of 75 millimeter mercury (mmHg) (10 thousand Pascal [kPa]). The arterial pressure of SBP and DBP is not fixed, and the blood pressure between one heartbeat and another heartbeat is changing all the time. At the same time, blood pressure also changes due to pressure, nutrition, drugs, diseases and exercise.
