What is the arm sphygmomanometer?

The blood pressure monitor arm sphygmomanometer is a medical device used to measure a person's blood pressure. It consists of an inflatable cuff that is wrapped around the upper arm and an attached gauge that displays the pressure. The cuff is inflated by hand or by a mechanical pump, and then slowly deflated while the healthcare provider listens to the blood flow with a stethoscope or observes the gauge for readings.

How to use the arm sphygmomanometer?

1. Sit down comfortably and relax for several minutes before taking your blood pressure reading.

2. Place the cuff around your upper arm, with the bottom edge of the cuff about one inch above your elbow.

3. Make sure the arrows on the cuff are aligned with the artery in your arm. Position the cuff snugly around your arm.

4. Hold the manometer, or pressure gauge, in your left hand and squeeze the rubber bulb with your other hand to inflate the cuff.

5. Watch the gauge until the needle reaches 180-200 mmHg.

6. Slowly release air from the cuff by turning the valve

7. Continue to release air from the cuff until the gauge reads 0 mmHg. This is when the diastolic pressure reading (the bottom number) is obtained.
