What is Mercury Thermometer

Mercury Thermometer is a glass thermometer that contains a mercury bulb and a mercury column. It can measure temperatures between -38℃ and 360℃.

Mercury Thermometer is often used to measure body temperature. The mercury bulb at the end has different shapes and sizes depending on the measurement position. For example, the oral thermometer is slender, the rectal thermometer is short and round, or it is distinguished by color. The mercury in the thermometer expands when heated. The degree of increase in the mercury column depends on the degree of heat. The data that does not rise after rising to a certain scale is the correct body temperature reading.

advantages of Mercury Thermometer

High precision

Mercury thermometers measure based on the principle of mercury's thermal expansion and contraction. Under ideal conditions, they can measure temperature differences below 0.1 degrees Celsius, which can meet many scenarios with high requirements for temperature measurement accuracy, such as scientific experiments, medical diagnosis, etc.

Easy to use

The operation method is relatively simple. Usually, you only need to place the mercury end in the measurement area or measurement environment, and then wait for a period of time to directly read the temperature value. No additional power supply or complicated operating procedures are required

Low price

Compared with some electronic temperature measuring equipment or other high-precision thermometers, mercury thermometers have low production costs and are relatively cheap. They are easily accepted by the public and have a high cost-effectiveness ratio

Long service life

Under normal use and proper storage, mercury thermometers can be used for many years without losing accuracy. A mercury thermometer can serve people for a long time, reducing the cost and trouble of frequent replacement of thermometers.

How to use a mercury thermometer correctly?

Make sure the thermometer is placed in a position that represents the actual temperature of the measurement environment. For example, when measuring indoor temperature, do not place the thermometer near a heat source (such as a heater, stove) or a vent. It should be placed in a relatively open, well-ventilated location indoors that is away from direct sunlight.
After placing the thermometer, you need to wait for a while for the mercury column of the thermometer to stabilize. Generally, the waiting time is about 5-10 minutes, and the specific time can be adjusted appropriately according to factors such as how fast the ambient temperature changes. When the mercury column no longer changes, you can read the temperature.

01

Check before use

First, observe the appearance of the thermometer to see if the mercury column is below 35℃. If the mercury column is higher than 35℃, you need to shake it back to below 35℃. The method is to hold the end of the thermometer (the end away from the mercury bubble) with your hand, and then quickly shake the thermometer. Be careful to keep the thermometer vertically downward to avoid touching surrounding objects and damaging the thermometer.

02

Oral measurement

Place the mercury end of the thermometer under the tongue and gently close your mouth. Do not talk or bite the thermometer with your teeth during the measurement process to avoid damaging the thermometer, causing mercury leakage or affecting the measurement results. Take the reading after keeping it for about 3-5 minutes.

03

Underarm measurement

Also disinfect the thermometer first. Wipe the sweat from the armpit, put the mercury end of the thermometer into the center of the armpit, and then clamp the thermometer with your upper arm to make close contact between the thermometer and the skin. The measurement time is generally 5-10 minutes, and then take the reading.

04

Rectal measurement

This method is generally used for special groups such as infants or comatose patients. First, apply an appropriate amount of vaseline or other lubricant to the mercury end of the thermometer, and then slowly insert the thermometer into the anus to a depth of about 3-4 cm. The measurement time is about 3 minutes, and then carefully remove the thermometer to read the reading.

Types of Mercury Thermometer

According to the purpose, it can be divided into medical, industrial and experimental use.

Medical

Medical mercury thermometers are mainly used to measure human body temperature. The scale range is generally around 35℃ - 42℃. The design is relatively small and easy to use;

Industrial

Industrial mercury thermometers have a wider measurement range and can meet the temperature measurement needs of different industrial production environments, such as oil refining, chemical industry and other fields;

Experimental

Experimental mercury thermometers have higher accuracy requirements and are usually used for scientific research in laboratories. They can accurately measure subtle changes in temperature.

FAQ

Q:  How many minutes does a mercury thermometer measure?

A: It is recommended to measure for 5-10 minutes, then take out the mercury thermometer to read the temperature data. When reading the mercury thermometer, hold the end of the thermometer with one hand, that is, the end away from the mercury column, keep your eyes and the thermometer at the same level, and then slowly turn the thermometer until you can see the mercury column from the front. At this time, you can read the measured temperature value. Normally, the body temperature of a normal person is between 36.2℃-37.3℃.

Q:  Will a broken mercury thermometer cause poisoning?

A: After the thermometer is broken, the mercury will fall to the ground and form many silver balls of varying sizes. If it is not collected and processed in time, it will quickly evaporate into the air and become mercury vapor. Mercury vapor is very toxic. Inhaling high concentrations of mercury vapor (greater than 1.0mg/m³) in a short period of time will cause acute mercury poisoning, which manifests as dizziness, headache, fatigue, fever, etc.

Q: Should a mercury thermometer be added with 0.5?

A: When using a mercury thermometer to measure the temperature under the armpit, you need to add 0.5 degrees to the reading to more accurately reflect the core body temperature of the human body, while oral and rectal measurements do not require heating.

Q:  What is the normal oral temperature?

A: The normal range is: oral sublingual temperature is 36.3℃-37.2℃, rectal temperature is 36.5℃-37.7℃, which is higher than the oral temperature (0.2℃-0.5℃), and axillary temperature is 36.0℃-37.0℃. The standard of normal body temperature is based on the values of most people, not the absolute values of individuals.

Q:  Will mercury evaporate?

A: Mercury is a silvery-white liquid metal that evaporates at room temperature.
