Measuring a baby's temperature using a mercury thermometer is an important tool for monitoring their health. However, it is important to follow the correct procedures when using a mercury thermometer to ensure accurate results and prevent any injuries.
Firstly, ensure that the thermometer is clean and free of any debris or dust. To do this, wipe the thermometer with a clean cloth or tissue. Avoid touching the bulb or shaking it.
Next, place the baby on their back and hold them securely. Using one hand, gently lift the baby's legs upwards so that their buttocks are raised slightly off the surface. This ensures proper insertion of the thermometer.
Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly or other lubricant to the tip of the thermometer before gently inserting it about half an inch into the baby's rectum. Hold the thermometer in place with your hand on the baby's buttocks for about two minutes.
During the two minutes, avoid any movements or jarring of the thermometer as this can cause inaccurate readings. After two minutes, remove the thermometer and read the temperature indicated by the mercury. Record the temperature and dispose of the thermometer safely as mercury is toxic and can cause serious harm if ingested.
