Do You Know What Levels Of Listening Are Available?

Degree of Hearing Loss is the average air conductivity threshold measured by pure tone audiometry (PTA) at 500Hz, 1000Hz, 2000Hz, and 4000Hz, which is classified into the following levels according to the latest WHO 2021 standard:

Grading Hearing threshold (dB HL) Clinical manifestations

Normal hearing ≤20 dB allows you to hear subtle ambient sounds such as the rustling of leaves (20 dB).

Mild hearing loss of 21-35 dB inaudible whispers (30dB) and difficulty recognizing speech in noisy environments

Moderate hearing loss 36 to 50 dB Normal conversations (50 to 60 dB) require increased volume, with significant loss of high-frequency consonants (eg, /s/, /th/).

Moderate to severe loss of 51-65 dB must speak aloud (65 dB), telephone communication is difficult, and speech intelligibility is significantly reduced

Severe loss of 66-80 dB can only be heard loud shouts (>80 dB), unable to communicate naturally, and relies on lip reading

Very loud sounds, such as thunder (110 dB), ≥ very severe/total deafness, may be perceived with vestibular dysfunction
