How To Use A Digital Thermometer To Measure The Body Temperature Of Animals Correctly?

1. Preparation
Choose a suitable electronic thermometer: Make sure the thermometer is reliable, accurate, and suitable for the size of the animal. Generally speaking, there are electronic thermometers designed specifically for different animals, such as for dogs and cats, large animals, etc.

Prepare lubricants: You can use lubricants such as vaseline to reduce friction when inserting the rectal thermometer to prevent damage to the animal.

Calm the animal: Before measuring the body temperature, try to calm the animal to keep it relatively calm and reduce stress reactions. This can be achieved by talking softly, stroking, etc.

2. Measurement process
Rectal temperature measurement (suitable for most animals):
Keep the animal in a side-lying or standing position, and an assistant can help fix the animal to prevent it from moving around.
Turn on the electronic thermometer and apply lubricant to the probe part of the thermometer.

Gently lift the animal's tail and slowly insert the thermometer probe into the animal's rectum. The insertion depth is generally about half to two-thirds of the length of the thermometer. Be careful to move gently to avoid excessive force that damages the animal's intestines.
Wait for the thermometer to sound a prompt or the reading on the display to stabilize, indicating that the measurement is complete. This process usually takes from a few seconds to more than ten seconds.

Take out the thermometer, read the temperature value, and record it.
Ear temperature measurement (applicable to some animals):
For some small animals or animals that are not suitable for rectal temperature measurement, you can try ear temperature measurement. Gently place the probe of the electronic thermometer into the external ear canal of the animal, and make sure it fits tightly against the ear canal wall.

Wait for the thermometer to prompt that the measurement is completed, read and record the temperature value.

3. Precautions
Safety first: During the temperature measurement process, pay attention to your own safety and avoid being bitten or scratched by the animal. If the animal is fierce or uncooperative, you can use appropriate restraining equipment.

Cleaning and disinfection: After each use of the electronic thermometer, wipe the thermometer probe with alcohol cotton balls or disinfectant wipes to clean and disinfect it to prevent cross infection.

Accurate reading: When reading the temperature value, make sure that the line of sight is perpendicular to the thermometer display to obtain an accurate reading. If you have any questions about the reading, you can repeat the measurement several times and take the average value.

Reference to normal body temperature range: The normal body temperature range of different animals is different. Understand the normal body temperature range of the animal to determine whether the measurement result is normal. If the animal's body temperature is abnormal, you should consult a veterinarian promptly for further examination and diagnosis.
