An oximeter is a medical instrument used to measure the oxygen concentration in a person's blood. This instrument is usually used to monitor the function of a patient's respiratory system, but can also be used to monitor heart function.

Blood oxygen saturation is an indicator of oxygen concentration in the blood, indicating the percentage of oxygen in the blood as a percentage of all soluble oxygen. Normal blood oxygen saturation ranges from 94% to 100%, and blood oxygen saturation below 90% is considered a sign of hypoxemia. Oximeters are a critical tool for determining oxygen needs in newborns, especially those with medical conditions such as congenital heart disease and respiratory abnormalities. However, adult oximeters may not be the right size for use in infants.

Pediatric pulse oximeters are generally used in children. They work the same way as adult oximeters, but pediatric devices are designed to fit on smaller fingers. In infants and young children, a handheld pediatric oximeter is used where the probe is placed on the child's palm or foot. Oximeter readings between 95-100% are within the normal range for healthy children.
